The councilors have been emphasizing in the corporation meetings every month that the public is being affected by dog bites in the Madurai Corporation areas and that steps should be taken to control the movement of dogs.
In this context, RTI activist N.G. Mohan from Sathya Sai Nagar, Madurai, had sought various information through RTI, including the number of people who were admitted to the Government Rajaji Hospital for treatment due to dog bites in Madurai, and the number of deaths.
In the response given by the Rajaji Hospital administration, it has been stated that in the 5 years from 2020 to November 2024, a total of 1 lakh 33 thousand 523 (1,33,523) people who were bitten by rabid dogs in the Madurai Corporation areas were admitted and treated at the Government Rajaji Hospital, and 32 of them died of rabies.

While RTI activist Mohan informed about this, “There are a large number of stray dogs roaming around in the areas of Madurai Corporation. Due to this, the public is living in fear. To control stray dogs, sterilization treatments should be done on a large scale. Even though the corporation says that it is sterilizing dogs on a large scale, the number of dogs is increasing. The number of stray dogs should be calculated and a study should be conducted,” he said.
At the same time, “If they are bitten by social dogs, which are called street dogs, they should not be indifferent and should be treated immediately. People and government administrations should not bite or harass social dogs and should take care of their welfare,” animal welfare activists say.

இந்நிலையில் மதுரை சத்திய சாய் நகரைச் சேர்ந்த ஆர்.டி.ஐ ஆர்வலர் என்.ஜி. மோகன், மதுரையில் நாய் கடியால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு சிகிச்சைக்காக அரசு ராஜாஜி மருத்துவமனையில் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டவர்கள், உயிரிழந்தவர்களின் எண்ணிக்கை உள்ளிட்ட பல்வேறு தகவல்களை ஆர்.டி.ஐ மூலம் கேட்டிருந்தார்.
இதற்கு ராஜாஜி மருத்துவமனை நிர்வாகம் அளித்துள்ள பதிலில், 2020 முதல் 2024-ஆம் ஆண்டு நவம்பர் வரையிலான 5 ஆண்டுகளில் மதுரை மாநகராட்சி பகுதிகளில் வெறிநாய் கடியால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு அரசு ராஜாஜி மருத்துவமனையில் மொத்தம் 1 லட்சத்து 33 ஆயிரத்து 523 பேர் (1,33,523) அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டு சிகிச்சை அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும், அதில் ரேபிஸ் பாதிக்கப்பட்டு 32 பேர் உயிரிழந்தள்ளதாகவும் தெரிவித்துள்ளனர்.
ஆர்.டி.ஐ தகவல்
இது குறித்து ஆர்.டி.ஐ ஆர்வலர் மோகன் தெரிவிக்கும்போது, “மதுரை மாநகராட்சி பகுதிகளில் அதிக அளவில் தெரு நாய்கள் சுற்றி திரிகிறது. இதனால் பொதுமக்கள் அச்சத்துடன் வாழ்கின்றனர். தெரு நாய்களை கட்டுப்படுத்த கருத்தடை சிகிச்சைகளை அதிக அளவில் செய்ய வேண்டும். மாநகராட்சி தரப்பில் நாய்களுக்கு அதிக அளவில் கருத்தடை செய்வதாக கூறினாலும், நாய்களின் எண்ணிக்கை அதிகரிக்கிறது. தெருநாய்களின் எண்ணிக்கையை கணக்கிட்டு ஆய்வு நடத்த வேண்டும்” என்றார்.
அதே நேரம், “தெரு நாய்கள் என்று சொல்லப்படும் சமூக நாய்கள் கடித்தால் அலட்சியமாக இல்லாமல் உடனே சிகிச்சை எடுக்க வேண்டும். சமூக நாய்களை சீண்டாமல், துன்புறுத்தாமல் அவைகளின் நலனில் மக்களும், அரசு நிர்வாகங்களும் அக்கறை கொள்ள வேண்டும்” என விலங்குகள் நல ஆர்வலர்கள் தெரிவிக்கின்றனர்.
